Burger Wars!!

May 18th, 2011. Posted by Dave

Last Thursday saw the first ever Sydney Burger Wars, held at our own Rockpool Bar & Grill Sydney. Organised by Myffy Rigby from Time Out Magazine, the event pitted six of Sydney’s best Chefs and their burgers in a Battle Royale (with cheese…). The competeting chefs were:

Neil Perry, RB&G Sydney

Justin North, Becasse and Charlie & Co. Burgers

Colin Fassnidge, Four in Hand

Joe Pavlovich, Glass Brasserie

Dan Hong, Ms. G’s

RJ Lines, Neutral Bay Bar & Dining

Colin Fassnidge assembling his burger – his secret ingredient: pickled turnips

Dan Hong, opting for the pan over the grill

Justin North’s Charlie & Co. burger

Joe Pavlovich - pickle on the side

Justin North manning the grill

Neil getting in on the action

RJ Lines, getting ready for judging

It was interesting to see each chef’s version of the burger – what kind of pickle they went for, the kind of lettuce (if any – iceberg being the day’s controversial choice), cooked on the wood-fire grill or in the pan…

After cooking up their best burger they were sent to the judges – possibly the best burger judging panel ever assembled - Myffy Rigby (Time Out), Pat Nourse (Gourmet Traveller), Terry Durack and Jill Dupliex (SMH), Franz Scheurer (Australian Gourmet Pages) and Anthony Puharich (Vic’s Meats).

The results were as follows:

3rd Place: Colin Fassnidge, Four in Hand

2nd Place: RJ Lines, Neutral Bay Bar & Dining

…drumroll…

1st Place: Neil Perry, RB&G Sydney!

Colin wins 3rd place

Congrats to Neil, RJ and Colin… and well done to Dan, Joe and Justin for putting up a solid fight. Hopefully this can be an annual event, with Dan Hong suggesting a Taco-Off for the next competition! It was fun to see all the Chefs in the kitchen and the banter between them… And most of all well done to Myffy for organising a great event! Bring on the Tacos!!!
