Underneath his wagyu-laden Rockpool Bar & Grill, Neil Perry has created a modern sultry space where the heady flavours of China’s western and northern provinces are combined with the very finest produce. There’s craft, variety and refinement even.

Two years after its plasma-screen door first swung open, the seriously dark, sexy opium den-inspired basement remains a conversation starter… it’s arguably Sydney’s, if not Australia’s, best modern Chinese restaurant…

From the startling front door with its alluring animated imaging to its starkly pale bar and low-lit, night-clubby, basement dining room, Spice Temple is the modern Chinese place of worship Sydney has been waiting for. A good-looking crowd sits over clever, zodiac-namd cocktails and shared regional Chinese dishes (often Sichuan and Hunanese in origin) that can numb the mouth and excite the senses…

Neil Perry turns the chilli volume up to 11 to focus on evocative and feisty regional Chinese flavours. This low-lit basement room, surrounded by vertical venetian blinds that look like the lovechild of a paling fence and a Brett Whiteley match, is reminiscent of an opium den… With generous portions, switched-on service and a pumping soundtrack (a bit too loud at times), Spice Temple rescues Sydney Sinophiles from the Cantonese doldrums.

Sydney is a town where Asian flavours are taken seriously and the sexiest combination of superb food with great heat and depth, a terrific ambiance and a captivating wine list has to be found at Spice Temple, Neil Perry”s new Asian venture. Spice Temple is one of my favourite places to eat, relax and enjoy. It deserves recognition as one of the best Asian restaurants anywhere in the world.
